Mon 06.09.10. Darfield Quake. Day 3. State of Emergency, Christchurch CBD Cordon

Mon 06.09.10. Day 3 after Darfield Quake. State of Emergency, Christchurch CBD Cordon. Lovely, sunny, State of Emergency day, when I focussed on Papanui Rd quake damage, near where Luke worked on a building site at Naseby St. Quake damaged shops were plastic tape cordoned, some quake damaged bldgs began to have steel mesh fence cordons. I also trekked the CBD State of Emergency cordon, where Burnham NZDF troops guarded crossings with cops & Civil Defence (CD).

After dropping Luke off at Naseby St, I parked at the end of Rugby St & looked at quake damaged Merivale shopping area, Papanui Rd.

I'd trekked the biggest State of Emergency cordon on the first day Burnham Military Camp soldiers assisted cops guarding the quaked CBD. Days hence, I'd trek 3 more CBD State of Emergency cordons, which would shrink into pockets of plastic taped, steel mesh fence cordoned bldgs closer to Manchester St. It was the first State of Emergency Christchurch ever had.

State of Emergency DANGER: Security forces were hostile to citizens, implying they were looters. Overbearing cops & soldiers strutted streets, finger wagging. Civil Defence wearing orange, Hi-Vis vests, also ordered citizens around at cordons.

EXTREME DANGER: A State of Emergency could degenerate into a state of terror, soldiers & cops supporting tyranny, the chosen privileged frowning at teeming masses: insiders, outsiders looking for trouble.

*Trekked Rugby St, Papanui Rd, Memorial Ave, Rolleston Ave, Worcester Blvd, Montreal St, Hereford St, Gloucester St, Latimer Sq, Madras St, Lichfield St, St Asaph St, Manchester St, Colombo St, Mollett St, Durham St Sth, Cambridge Tce. 110 snaps.

Facebook:

Colombo St: Luke's girlfriend lost her restaurant work: Morocco Simos, Beckenham kaput! Loss of earnings in Canterbury serious, many off work due to hazardous bldgs.

Hazards of sewage & water mixing underground as aftershocks continue to mess pipes. Boiling of water needed. Kaiapoi in kak, its sewage farm on a river bank, Kaiapoi on the Ashley-Waimakariri-Styx Rivers floodplain. Waimakariri stopbanks N of Chch not breached. 6 September 10.14am

Delayed shock, sadness: Leah sad yesterday. Day 3, this morning, a woman sobbing,  Papanui Rd / Aikmans Rd. I was tearful, angry: had just photographed quake damage at Papanui Rd between Rugby St & Aikmans Rd: Merivale shops damaged. Chinese Methodist Church, 1894, no sign of quake reinforcement, condemned, yellow Xs & NOs on all blue doors. 6 September 10.31am.

Leah here: You guys out there with normal stuff going on are a treat for us. It brings normality to our quake shocked world. Although our home got off lightly in the quake, the devastation around us is hard to take in & will affect all who live here for some time to come. Loss of earnings will be ongoing for some. A huge part of the region is away from work till bldgs have been checked as safe. Schools plan to reopen on Wednesday if able to.

Right now I have gripy guts from not boiling water enough. A friend's home was condemned & I know others who no longer have a place of work to go to. Some places almost look like movie sets, except it is real.

Aftershocks continue with earth-shifts felt regularly. Some are just tremors under our feet, but others are mini quakes around M3 & M4 on the Richter Scale. One which woke me this morning about 5.15am felt at least M4 or more. 6 September 11.55am.

@Stephen. Quake damage in waves about 500+ metres apart. Saw 2 military helicopters flying tandem over the CBD, Saturday afternoon post quake. Would love to see aerial pics of quake damage, to follow seismic waves.

Most of Chch OK. Brick chimneys, old brick bldgs, pavement awnings collapsed, mostly in the CBD. Lots of flooding in the CBD & suburbs near rivers, especially Avon River, due to sewage & water pipes bursting, pressured by underground water & shaking. Drinking water must be boiled.

Wooden bldgs away from swamps & rivers are mostly OK, like our wooden rental house. Many roads, gutters, pavements, brick bldg walls, floors, roofs are cracked, buckled, collapsed, slumped or humped. Single storey bldgs better off. Double storey or higher more damaged due to vertical amplifying of ground shaking.

Day 3 Monday, after Sat morn quake, Burnham Camp soldiers directed traffic on Colombo St by South City supermarket. They stopped people entering the inner CBD cordon. Cops, soldiers, Civil Defence volunteers guarded CBD crossings & entrances. Cops: laid back, last defence for 2 CBD outer & inner plastic-taped cordons. Civil Defence, fatty volunteers in front of cordons, wore orange, Hi-Vis vests.

Yesterday Monday, I swore at a CD volunteer when he stopped me going past the Art Gallery / Civil Defence HQ on Worcester Blvd, after he'd allowed tourists through.

I trekked around Central Police multi-storey via Hereford St. Entered the CBD further down Worcester Blvd. [Vague cordons]. Self- important bldg inspectors / "experts" wandered the CBD with clipboards & hard hats, checking bldgs for retention or demolition.

Seismologists hadn't a clue Saturday morning's quake & aftershocks were coming. In future I would expect arse-covering by seismologists, builders, engineers, councillors, politicians. Heard "expert" gobbledegook on TV last night about soil pore size & mud.

[Nearly 3 months post quake, "experts" would jabber in The Press, 29.11.10, about 4 or more faults causing Darfield Quake, seismic waves bouncing off Port Hills hard rock, causing Christchurch damage].

Liquefaction: Tons of river, swamp & road foundation mud was forced out of road tar & gutter cracks, deposited onto roads, gardens, houses. Some roads flooded. Kaiapoi, N of Chch, a disaster, as Kaiapoi's on a flood plain near 3 rivers with Kaiapoi sewage ponds by a river bank.

Monday: I snapped CBD damages, incl 3 cops snapping Worcester Blvd damages. 7 September 9.30am.

@George. I'm snapping before clean up of quake damages. I think the 'old country' is safer than Chch now. 7 September 9.43am.

NZ Breakfast TV, Christchurch aftershocks: 11.24pm M5.2; 11.38pm M4; 11.40pm M5.4; 12.21am M4.7; 03.24am M5.4. Leah shook me awake! 7 September 9.58am.

@Anne. We're saddened by others' losses. I'm snapping as much as I can. 7 September 10.52am.
